Cinema, Christmas Cheer, and Convalescence

A couple of treats for the family this weekend: matinée showings of the movies Enchanted and The Golden Compass. Yesterday we were out running erands, and, in front of the girls, I asked Susan whether we could swing by the mall (where the movie theater is). They suspected only more shopping as we unloaded and walked in the mall doors near the theater--although they did see the movie posters on the wall, which prompted them to mention that it would be fun to see these movies sometime. I pish-poshed them and made as though I were headed for a particular store. Susan, meanwhile, got in the queue to buy tickets. Once the girls noticed that, they got so excited! It's fun that they can still be so thrilled at the notion of seeing a movie in the theater. We watched Enchanted and shared popcorn and pop and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Then today we were out for more errands, and--surprise, surprise--we ended up at the movie theater again. This time we were too full from dinner for snacks, but we really liked The Golden Compass. You can read all about my reactions to both movies here.

The girls had a special treat Saturday night, too: They got to spend the night at Susan's aunt and uncle Kathy and Pat's house. Susan and I were invited that night to a holiday party for my colleagues in the division I work in at DSU, so Susan asked Kathy if she could babysit. Kathy had already arranged to watch her own grandson that evening, but she proposed our bringing the girls to their house on Patterson Lake to join them all and spend the night there. Kathy even brought the girls to our house this morning in time for us to go to Sunday school and church together. Such wonderful relatives.

By the by, the holiday party was at the home of the vice president of our division. We had his address before leaving for the party, but it didn't occur to us that we ought to have recognized the house and street number until we were actually out driving around in search of his home. We discovered that he lives in the house that Susan's parents last lived in! It was so weird to enter that home again and see all the changes that have been made--a few remodel-y but mostly redecorate-y. It looks really good! We have lots of memories associated with that house, both positive (Suzanna's first steps in the kitchen; numerous holiday celebrations) and negative (Susan's mom passed away while they lived there). Anyway, we had a great time.

I'm sad to note that Susan's grandma, Laura, is in the hospital. We visited her as a family today, and the girls brought her homemade "get well" cards. The doctors are working on stabilizing her blood pressure and lowering her fever. She seemed tired but was happy to see the girls and visit with us. Please add her to your prayer list for a speedy recovery.

  1. Grandma update: she's been moved out of the hospital and into the same nursing home where my grandpa lives. She's still very weak, but she isn't confused any more (for a while, she didn't know where she was or what month it was....). Thank you for all your prayers -- we continue to pray that she recovers her strength.

  2. I'm glad Gramma will be taken care of, it's comforting to know that she won't be by herself anymore.

So the house where your holiday party was re-decorated. No more loud stripes and flower combos? That's what I'll miss most of all.

Anyway, it's good that you were able to visit the house. I hope someday I'll get the chance to go through the house that I grew up in again.

  3. wow....such a strange coincidence. Maybe a little bit of fate, perhaps?

Susan, I'll be praying for your Grandma.
