Inaugural Fire Pit Lighting

For my birthday last year, one of my gifts from my family was a fire pit for backyard use. Susan and I had earlier last summer seen a fire pit that we liked, but when she went back to purchase it, they were out of stock. So she bought a different version; but after I opened it, we decided to return it and wait for the one that we actually wanted to make its way back into the store. This spring Susan found it and bought it, and we've been waiting ever since for the right time to use it (waiting for the city's burn ban to be lifted seemed a crucial first step).

Whenever the girls have performed in a play or a school music program or a piano recital, etc., we usually take them out afterward to an ice cream shoppe for a frozen treat. After today's performances, however, they opted instead for s'mores made over a backyard fire, the first use of our fire pit. I was watering the back yard anyway, and there was only a slight breeze, so it seemed an ideal night for it.

The camera's flash washes everything in light, but the soft glow of the colored lights on the veranda and the flames of the crackling fire looked gorgeous against the dark blue of the sky as the sun finally slipped out of sight. Here are the girls monitoring the progress of the fire.

Here's the same shot minus the flash.

Susan had all the s'mores ingredients laid out on the prep station of the barbecue grill.

The girls polished off their s'mores with rapid dispatch. Out of camera range, I discovered that melted marshmallow sticks to beard.

There's just something about an outdoor fire on a still summer night. What a great way to end a great day!

  1. Looks like you all had a wonderful evening. If your girls miss having smores and it's a problem burning outside it can be done under the broiler by taking a cookie sheet and putting your gram crackers down with pieces of chocolate bar on top and then the marshmallow put it under the broiler with the door slightly open and watch it carefully when the marshmallows are at the brownness you're looking for then remove and put a gram cracker on top of each one. We had done this one year due to being rain out when we were having a family and friends gathering cookout. Another good recipe doing the same trick with the broiler is take a Ritz cracker spread each one with peanut butter (creamy or chunky)put them down on the cookie sheet and put a marshmallow on top of each and put it under the broiler and watch until the desired brownness accrues then remove and let cool for a few minuets. This turned out to be a fave of some of our clan. -JD from Georgia

  2. We have ALSO been talking about getting a fire pit, just like the one in your photos... unfortunately in never gets DARK in Alaska in the summer.....but I still think it would be fun.
