Friday Night Social Engagements

What a busy night! Suzanna has a classmate over for the night, as does Hillary. Abigail is spending the night at a friend's house. A student invited me to attend an evening of short plays (at the university), one of which she directed. I was gone a couple hours for that event, leaving Susan alone at home to catch up on some reading while Suzanna, Hillary, and their guests enjoyed popcorn and an American Girl movie: Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front.

The plays tonight were ten-minute plays, which--as you might guess, faithful readers--translates to "not the highest quality scripts available." Nevertheless, it was a pretty enjoyable evening, not the least because I knew several of the performers throughout the night. Eight short plays equals variety . . . and means that, if there is a stinker in the bunch, it's over quickly enough. Many of the plays featured coarse language that seemed to energize the actors charged with speaking those words. The university students in the audience loved hearing that language, while the older couples tolerated it with stone faces. Meh.

It's a quiet household right now. Susan tucked in all the girls and retired to the living room to read while I sit here typing and listening to Norah Jones, The Little Willies, Cowboy Junkies, The Cottars, Bonnie Raitt, Susie Suh, Julie Christensen, The Waifs, Brandi Carlile, Hem, and Gwen Hughes. Very mellow.
